Veterans and Mental Health

Mental health disorders impact the military and veterans community at numbers that are often higher than those seen in civilian populations. This makes it vital that veterans have a reliable resource for the treatment of their specific issues. Quality mental health programs for veterans should address a multitude of types of mental illnesses. This helps those who served in the military get the extensive, focused care they deserve.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder impacts the lives of many veterans. Statistics for specific military events breakdown as follows:

  • During Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, about 11-20% of veterans developed PTSD.
  • During the Gulf War (Desert Storm), approximately 12% of veterans developed PTSD.
  • During the Vietnam War, approximately 15% of veterans had developed PTSD at the time of an initial study. Over time, a newer study revealed that about 30% of Vietnam Vets developed PTSD over their lifetime.

Another report showed that in a study done on 7,161 veterans, higher than normal amounts of personality disorders were found. The study found that 23% of the participants were paranoid while 21% had borderline personality disorders. These rates proved highest with vets who used substances or were at risk for suicide.

Mental Health Programs for Veterans in Tucson, AZ

We offer several types of mental health programs for veterans that help address the issues specific to this community. Our experienced staff is trained to communicate with veterans and help them heal. Together, we work with them by providing an assessment to understand their full diagnosis. From there, each individual can determine the goals they would like to accomplish.

The types of programs we offer each have something that can help with symptoms that occur for many veterans. These programs include:

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Exposure to and participation in military acts can cause PTSD to develop in many veterans. Even just witnessing one event, whether in wartime or not, can be temporarily compartmentalized by the individual. However, after time, they develop PTSD and will need PTSD treatment in order to overcome the symptoms.

Complex Trauma

While PTSD can develop after just one traumatic event, many people can develop complex trauma. This results from repeated exposure to traumatic events, such as those that occur when serving in the military. Complex trauma can effectively be treated through programs specifically targeting this mental health condition.

Anxiety

Military life contains a lot of stressful events. Constantly moving and adapting to new environments are a given. When the veteran also deals with military actions, anxiety can develop and require anxiety treatment in order to overcome the symptoms.

Depression

Veterans often witness a lot of depressing circumstances during the course of their careers. Trying to process this, as well as coming back home and learning to adapt to their old lives, can bring on depression. Treatment for depression can help individuals learn more about their conditions and learn how to deal with them when symptoms occur.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder drastically affects a person’s moods, with the person often cycling from euphoria to depression. Many veterans deal with this condition and need bipolar treatment for managing the symptoms.

Schizophrenia

This thought disorder can develop after exposure to the types of serious events that veterans experience. Schizophrenia treatment has come a long way and is useful in helping people minimize their symptoms.

Borderline Personality Disorder

This mental illness affects a higher percentage of our military population when compared to civilians. BPD is very complex, but can be treated with the right care.

Dual Diagnosis

Sadly, many veterans respond to poor mental health by using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate. This can result in developing a dual diagnosis, which is having both a mental illness and an addiction. Luckily, Montare of Tucson offers a comprehensive dual diagnosis treatment program.
